We are always looking for deal and prices can vary greatly to the same resort even by just going on a different day. We have had great stays at the Barcelo Maya, upgrading to the Club Premium when we were checking in, it can be quite a bit cheaper than picking an upgrade when booking.
Simply if the resort has space they will accomodate and a talk with the manager can have good results.
I recommend upgrading if possible for a lot of reasons, being closer to the pool or beach with a view, more services are included like for us wi-fi is important, room service, robes, towels in room and more selections for à la carte dining.
