The Massive Luxury Hotel That's Trying To Kill Airbnb

To compete with Airbnb, Ian Schrager's PUBLIC Hotel in New York's Lower East Side offers a modern luxury experience at rates as low as $150/night. To reduce costs, PUBLIC operates with less staff than most hotels and uses technology to replace amenities like standard room service. Following is a transcript of the video.

The PUBLIC hotel offers "luxury for all." PUBLIC is a 367-room hotel in New York City’s Lower East Side. Room rates start at just $150/night, but to reduce costs, PUBLIC has less staff than a typical hotel.

PUBLIC was created by hotelier Ian Schrager, cofounder of legendary NYC nightclub Studio 54. The property was purchased in 2012 for $50 million.

Ian Schrager (Founder, PUBLIC Hotel): You know, I don’t know why the industry is in denial about AirBnB. You can’t stop a good idea. You may delay it, you may slow it down, but it’s a new idea and at the end the new idea will prevail. And the only way to defeat the new idea, is with another new idea.

Guests check themselves in via kiosks. There's no standard room service. Instead, food orders are placed on the main floor for pickup.

Ian Schrager: We tried to reduce the labor component as much as we could and tried to make the communication as easy as we possibly could through the use of technology, the intuitive technology. We only wanted to have technology if it made things easier or it made it cheaper.

PUBLIC offers several restaurants and bars, a basement club and arts venue, and a rooftop lounge.

Ian Schrager: Airbnb cannot provide a social, communal experience. They can't. Hotels used to be more than a place to sleep. They should be a microcosm of the best that the city has to offer. We need to provide as hoteliers, those things Airbnb can't provide.

Emirates Business Class - Geneva to Dubai (EK 90) - Boeing 777-300ER

In this trip report, we look at an Emirates Business Class flight from Geneva Cointrin Airport to Dubai International Airport on a Boeing 777-300 ER.

I use the complimentary Emirates chauffeur service, which sees me picked up in a Mercedes Benz E class from my hotel and dropped off in style at Geneva Airport. I use the priority check-in for Business Class passengers and am soon breezing through the fast-track security. I make a quick visit to the Dnata Skyview Lounge, which Emirates subcontracts lounge services to in Geneva. It's quiet and underused before the flight. I have a quick snack before I head to the gate for boarding.

The flight is delayed for a couple of hours due to a mechanical fault, but we're soon on our way. A shuttle bus takes us from the gate to the B777-300ER, where I'm soon in my Business Class seat. Since the pilots are in a rush to get the plane airborne, there's not much time to look at the seat while on the tarmac.

After a quick take-off, I get a chance to review the Business Class seat and cabin. I find that it's the older B777 Business Class seat which is the angle-flat seat arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration. I review the seat features before I'm served an after-take off refreshment and multi-course meal service. Afterwards, I have a look at the airport toilet, amenities, IFE system and on-board cabin crew service. I also have a look at the angle-lie bed which I managed to get some sleep on before landing.

The ground crew at Emirates do a great job ensuring that I make my connecting flight to Sydney after the B777 lands in Dubai. Stay tuned for the video on EK 414 to Sydney!

Center Parcs Sherwood Forest 2017

Aerial adventure included lots of climbing and balancing activities and 3 zip lines!

We spent lots of time in the subtropical swim paradise. There were flumes, waves, Starbucks, a burger place, Rapids ride, jacuzzis and a huge wave machine throughout the indoor and outdoor area.

The lake on the man made beach was heavily patrolled and no water play was permitted but we managed to sneak past and have a few jumps in!

A very expensive but action packed place to go if your looking for your next adventure!

Sir Richard Branson posted a video along with pictures of the devastation to his luxury resort on Necker Island after Hurricane Irma hit.

The storm ripped apart the resort while Branson and his team hid in the wine cellar.

He said: "We felt the full force of the strongest hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean. But we are very fortunate to have a strong cellar built into Necker’s Great House and were very lucky all of our teams who stayed on Island during the storm are safe and well."

Our Dorset Camping Trip to Freshwater Beach Holiday Park - August 2017

Every summer we like to go camping and this year we revisited Dorset. On our last visit two years ago we stayed at Durdle Door but this year we stayed closer to the Devon boarder. Freshwater Beach Holiday Park is just outside Bridport and is just over 1 mile away from West Bay, where Broadchurch was filmed.

Take a look at the fab Holiday Park as well as our adventures to West Bay, Lyme Regis, Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park, Hive Beach and a pub dinner in the local village. Hope you enjoy it and make sure you stick around for the most amazing sunset at the end.
