It’s always a celebration to remember, and this year it’s also the 50th Anniversary of the Knoxville Area Urban League. The Equal Opportunity Awards Gala will be held Friday, Oct. 19, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Knoxville Convention Center and features chart-topping R&B band After 7 and its No. 1 hits, “Can’t Stop “and “Ready Or Not.” The gala is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Urban League and honors local individuals and businesses that promote diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity. President and CEO Phyllis Y. Nichols encourages the community to get tickets and attend.

Employee volunteers at Knoxville Utilities Board are spending Public Power Week, Oct. 7-13, helping shelter animals and handling grounds work at local nonprofits. The nationally recognized week in October – with the theme of “Powering Strong Communities – encourages companies like KUB to engage with their communities and promote the benefits of public utilities.

Thanks to Pilot Pumpers, Pilot donated $97,173 to the United Way of Greater Knoxville for its 2018 campaign. Nearly 100 local celebrities pumped gas at Knox County Pilot Convenience Stores Oct. 1-3. Pilot donated 5 cents for every gallon of gasoline and 10 cents of every dollar spent in-store on coffee and more. Since the event began in 1992, Pilot has donated more than $1.4 million to the United Way of Greater Knoxville.
